Posts and Stays

How far apart should fencing posts be installed?

This differs from one fencing contractor to the next.  Here are some guidelines.

  1. Main posts or straining posts are generally 30m - 60m apart, depending on the terrain (ground level).  Each post requires 2 stays (supports)  The more level the terrain, the further apart the posts can be installed.  These can be wooden posts, round steel posts or concrete posts.  Stays are generally the same length as the posts.
  2. Intermediate Posts are spaced 3m - 4m apart depending on the terrain.  Intermediate Posts do not need stays.  These can be wooden posts, round steel posts, steel standards or concrete posts.
  3. Gate posts are the same size as straining posts but only require 1 stay each.  These can be wooden posts, round steel posts or concrete posts.
  4. Posts should be installed at least 600mm into the ground.  The taller the fence, the deeper the post should be installed.
